Republicans Say the Darndest Things: How Not to Court America's Immigrant Vote

Presidential Candidate
Donald Trump (R)

Last week Donald Trump went on record saying:

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best.  They're sending people that have lots of problems.  They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime.  They're rapists.  Some, I assume, are good people."

NBC told him he was no longer needed as host of American Apprentice, Univision said it would no longer host his Miss Universe pageant, Macy's cut their ties with him and Sealy said he'd have to find another supplier for his hotel mattresses--BUT, he did shoot to number two in the latest Republican presidential polls.

what eye thynk:  Which says a lot about the attitudes of those who vote Republican.

Presidential Candidate
 Rick Santorum (R)

I guess presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who is polling somewhere around 1%, decided he could use a similar boost in his poll numbers.

Speaking to CBS' John Dickerson this Sunday morning, he jumped right into the muck with The Donald.

"The vast majority of people coming legally from Mexico and other places are people who want to do the right thing."

Well, I guess the "vast majority" is better than the "some" grudgingly admitted to by Mr. Trump.

He continued: "People who are coming illegally obviously are coming with a bad intent.  Let's just be honest, they're coming with the clear intent of breaking the law... They are breaking the law, and I think Donald points to a very important thing, which is, we have a serious problem of illegal immigration in this country that is undermining American workers... (They are) lowering the standard of living for people who are here legally."

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say neither Mr. Trump nor Mr. Santorum are looking to court the immigrant vote.

I wonder if there will be any more Republican candidates who think this is a good idea.  Ted, are you listening?  Mike?  Lindsey?
