Quick Note: Kentucky's Same-Sex Marriage Ban Struck Down

With all the news from the Supreme Court and the Hobby Lobby case, this almost slipped past without mention:
On Tuesday, Federal Judge John G. Heyburn struck down Kentucky's ban on same-sex marriage. Judge Heyburn previously ruled that Kentucky must recognize same-sex marriages performed in states where they are legal.  "Assuring equal protection for same-sex couples does not diminish the freedom of others to any degree."

Governor Steven Beshear (D) said that the state will appeal the ruling and Judge Heyburn issued a stay while the state's case is prepared and forwarded.

The state had argued that the ban on same-sex marriage promoted opposite-partner marriage among people who have the "natural ability to procreate" and that the stable birthrate these "naturals" bring is needed to ensure Kentucky's economic stability.

Judge Heyburn answered that argument by saying "These arguments are not those of serious people."
At least there is this to smile about this week.
