Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D- New Hampshire) had proposed a change to the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act that would have amended a federal statute which currently prevents the Department of Veterans Affairs from granting full benefits to married same-sex couples if they live in a state that prohibits same-sex marriage, even if the couple legally married in another state.
The amendment failed by seven votes. Afterwards, Ms. Shaheen said, "Veterans served their country bravely, and yet some are deprived of the very rights they risked their lives to protect. The impact of this discrimination is real. Monthly benefits are less; spouses and children are not eligible for medical care at the VA; and families are not eligible for the same death benefits."
Same-sex couples also receive smaller monthly disability payments and are not eligible for a VA home loan.
Senators and presidential candidates Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Florida) all voted against Senator Shaheen's amendment.
what eye thynk: These men and women volunteered to serve, we sent them to war where they risked their lives; and the Republican Party is too filled with hate to acknowledge their sacrifice.
How does who they love make their service less worthy of honor and respect?
I am beyond disgusted.

ReplyDeleteMe: holy shit Colonel Custer, look at all them Indians!
ReplyDeleteCol. Custer: don't worry, ain't no gays here. These guys are all straight. They'll save you. Just as well, too. Gays ain't got no benefits.
It disgusts me,too! I think straight, homophobic men are jealous because they don't have as much sex! Our soldiers gave everything, even their minds, to do this country's bidding, even though it was knowingly started by lies to every American and Congress. Bush Admin.should ALL be in prison. Our gay soldiers should be given the pursuit of happiness & whomever they marry should get benefits. Anything else is flat out discrimination!
