So, Who Do You Choose for President?

On Wednesday, in response to growing anger over a video made in the U.S. that mocked Mohammed, the American Embassy in Cairo issued a statement, (who issued the statement is not clear though it was not approved by the White House), asking for religious tolerance. This statement was issued hours before the attack on the our mission in Benghazi, Libya. “We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”

When news of the attack in Benghazi reached Mitt Romney, he seized the moment and, quoting the unauthorized statement from Cairo, (which had been issued hours before the attack, and so obviously was not a response to the attack), accused the President of apologizing for American values while appeasing Islamic extremists. “It‘s disgraceful that the Obama administration‘s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

President Obama’s actual response was: "The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack, and make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people."

Later, in a statement in the Rose Garden, he said:  "I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives...As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward."

what eye thynk: So who do you choose for President? The man who offered comfort to the victims’ families and vowed justice for their losses or the man who crassly attempted to use the situation for his own political gain?

Romney's Buddy Bibi Wants Another War?

Yesterday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel criticized the United States and President Obama for not setting clear “red lines” regarding Iran’s nuclear program, with the expectation that, if Iran were to cross our drawn boundary, we would undertake a military strike. Because we refuse to draw a line in the sand, Mr. Netanyahu believes that the U.S. has no “moral right” to stop Israel from taking military action on its own.

what eye thynk: And Israel has no “moral right” to expect us to jump to their summons if they decide to start a war on their own. We’ve had enough war. We’ve seen enough American lives wasted on nebulous causes promoted by gunslinger attitudes.

Mitt Romney has been quoted as saying that, if he were President, he would check with his buddy Bibi Netanyahu before taking a position on Israel and the Middle East. It appears that Bibi thinks he can force the same obsequious loyalty out of President Obama. Good luck with that.

Mr. Netanyahu may believe that his best buddy status with Mitt Romney and his unquestioning endorsement from Romney patron Sheldon Adelsen give him the right to dictate U.S. foreign policy; but Mitt isn’t running this country and Adelsen is still nothing but a rich casino owner. And if the voters in this country have any sense, that will still be the case on November 7.

In this era of shoot first, ask questions later, United States diplomacy needs to stand tall.  Yes, Iran's nuclear program scares me.  No sane person would want a loose cannon like Ahmadinejad to be one button away from a nuclear weapon; but starting a war to stop a war is not a rational course of action.

Talking may not get you all or exactly what you want, but it won’t squander another young soldier‘s life either.

September 10 - Monday Quote(s)

Some of my favorite quotes from the DNC...

monday quote(s):
Ted Strickland -- “Barack Obama is betting on the American worker. Mitt Romney is betting on a Bermuda shell corporation. Barack Obama saved the American auto industry. Mitt Romney saved on his taxes.”

Bill Clinton -- “We believe ‘we are all in this together’ is a better philosophy than ‘ you are on your own’…Democracy doesn’t have to be a blood sport. It can be an honorable enterprise.”

Michelle Obama -- “(Barack Obama) believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.”

And these three by Barack Obama -- “You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting your closest ally.”

“Have a surplus? Try a tax cut. Deficit too high? Try another. Feeling a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, reel back some regulations and call us in the morning.”

“If you turn away now--if you buy into the cynicism that the change we fought for isn’t possible…well, change will not happen. If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other voices will fill the void: lobbyists and special interests; the people with the $10 million checks who are trying to buy this election and those who are making it harder for you to vote: Washington politicians who want to decide who you can marry, or control health care choices that women should make for themselves. Only you can make sure that doesn’t happen...if you believe in a country where everyone gets a far shot and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules, then I need you to vote this November.”

Flip-flop Friday - Romney on the Economy

"Well, I frankly wish that the last Congress (had) dealt with the stimulus issue and that the president could have signed that before leaving office. I think there is need for economic stimulus. Americans have lost about $11 trillion in net worth. That translates into about $400 billion a year less spending that they'll be doing…And government can help make that up in a very difficult time. And that's one of the reasons why I think a stimulus program is needed." -- Mitt Romney, when asked about then President-elect Obama’s $750 billion economic stimulus package during a January 4, 2009 interview with Wolf Blitzer.

“No time, nowhere, no how” -- Mitt Romney, when asked about the exact same stimulus package at a town hall meeting in Goffstown, New Hampshire on September 28, 2011

what eye thynk: So, apparently if the stimulus package had been passed by W. it would have been a good thing, but because it was passed by Obama, it is a bad thing?

Republican stimulus = good. Democratic stimulus = bad.

And THAT attitude--which the Republicans have carried over into every issue, no matter how small or how large--is exactly what has all but crippled this country for the past four years.

Note to the Republican Party:  "Compromise" is not a dirty word; and "No" is not a plan.

Eye Recommend --- Letter to the Editor

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR, NYTimes -- I'm reproducing this in its entirety.  It is a succinct and well written letter.  Wish I'd written it myself:

I am a member of President Obama’s base of supporters. I am disappointed in him because of his failure to sell his achievements to the American people. He inherited two wars and the worst recession since the Great Depression. He also inherited a Congress that was more interested in getting re-elected than in working in the best interests of the American people.
We have a Supreme Court that feels money is the equivalent of free speech, and so more money is being spent in this election than in any previous election. This money is being spent by both parties to spread lies and half-truths.
I do not like the America envisioned by Mitt Romney and Paul D. Ryan, in which taxes are cut and there is no safety net for the poor, weak and disabled except for private charities — and in which the primary motive for Americans is to accumulate wealth with no regard for our climate, for the health and education of our children or for the rest of the world.

Eye Recommend --- Mr. Romney Reinvents History

MR. ROMNEY REINVENTS HISTORY, New York Times editorial -- "Mitt Romney wrapped the most important speech of his life, for Thursday night’s session of his convention, around an extraordinary reinvention of history — that his party rallied behind President Obama when he won in 2008, hoping that he would succeed."

Romney's Hypocritical Welfare Argument

In Des Moines on Wednesday, Romney continued his attack on President Obama and welfare saying that when the work requirement was first argued in Congress, then Senator Obama voted against it, (which is true). Mr. Romney went on, “Now he's President, and just a few days ago he put that original intent in place with a very careful executive action, he removed the requirement of work from welfare”.

what eye thynk: First, let’s get the facts straight…the work-for-welfare requirement has not been removed. Then, let’s call Romney's latest attack what it is…hypocrisy, plain and simple.

Last month, the Department of Health and Human Services granted all states some flexibility in the work-for-welfare requirement first put into effect in 1996 under President Clinton.  Following the President's signature, states will now be permitted to extend training periods as well as grant some exemptions. Each state must show that they have a plan better suited to their individual needs and must ask for and gain approval before making any changes. This is the exact type of flexibility that was sought by twenty-nine Republican governors in 2005 -- INCLUDING THEN GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY.

Last year, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, (Republican) asked for and was granted an easing of the work rule. Some families in that state can now be exempted from the work requirement for six months while officials work with them to stabilize their household.

More recently, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, (Republican) asked that refugee families be treated differently because of cultural barriers to employment.

The President, along with the Department of Health and Human Services, has given states exactly what they have been asking for for seven years, but Romney refuses to acknowledge that the impetus for the changes originated with Republicans like himself, choosing instead to vilify the President in the hope that his sanctimonious outpouring of outrage will drive a wedge between President Obama and blue collar voters.

The numbers of white and minority welfare recipients are currently fairly equal, but why allow facts to get in the way when ignoring them can be used to feed the latent racism of this country’s conservatives? And what better way to do that than to malign our first black President by portraying him as coddling his own?

April 30 - Monday Quote(s)

Saturday was the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, and the President got in some good ones.

monday quotes: President Obama noted that they were enjoying dinner in an enormous hotel ballroom--“what Mitt Romney would call a little fixer-upper”.

Acknowledging that both he and Romney have degrees from Harvard, though he has only one while Romney has two, he quoted Rick Santorum:  “What a snob”.

Talking about his appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show last week, the President said that Mr. Romney “asked if he could get some equal time on ‘The Merv Griffin Show’.”

Noting the presence of Newt Gingrich, he singled him out with: “Newt there’s still time, man!”.

President Obama mocked Republican criticism of his having eaten dog meat as a child in Indonesia and gave Sarah Palin a jab by tweaking her signature campaign joke. “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? A pit bull is delicious.”

He spoke to the members of Congress who attended, thanking them for taking “a break from their exhausting schedule of not passing any laws to be here tonight”.

Hillary Clinton got a mention for being photographed drinking a beer in a club during her visit to Colombia. “She won’t stop drunk-texting me from Cartagena”.

Talking about the Secret Service, the President said he had to leave the dinner early because he had to make sure he got his Secret Service detail “home in time for their new curfew”.

Pay Your Full Share -- Protect a Millionaire!

This past week I balanced the books for my small, (very small), business, yesterday I drove to Indianapolis for an audition, today I'm tackling our tax forms.

what eye thynk:  Yes, I know they're due on Tuesday.  I always promise myself I'm going to get them done early and then suddenly it's April and...well, there's always next year.

When I'm finished filing, I'm betting that my husband and I will end up paying a higher percentage than Romney's 14.9% and probably even President Obama's 20%.  *sigh*

So I've decided to attempt to get in touch with my "inner-philanthrope".   This should help me to feel good knowing that by paying our full share, we are helping a millionaire out there somewhere--one who, because of our generosity, will be able to keep more of his for himself and so won't have to settle for cloth seats instead of hand-rubbed distressed leather on his new private jet.  I mean, really, how could I expect him to fly to Aruba for dinner on cloth seats?  It would be too demoralizing.

Aw, crap.  It's not working.  Screw philanthropy.  I'm just pissed!  And I hope that millionaire has to eat his jet, right down to the buttons on his distressed leather seats.

Good News! Using Romney's Own Criteria, Obama Wins!

Mitt Romney spent part of last week in Wisconsin where he picked up the endorsement of Representative Paul D. Ryan. During one campaign stop, Mr. Romney is quoted as saying “This President…was not elected on the strength of his compelling record of accomplishment but by a compelling personality and story”.

what eye thynk: Let’s see, Romney’s accomplishments include one term as the governor of Massachusetts where he passed the Massachusetts health care insurance reform law, a law with the same personal mandate requirement that the Republicans believe is unconstitutional when applied to the ACA. Guess we can remove that law from Romney‘s accomplishment column since if the Affordable Care Act goes down, his law can’t be far behind. For now, both laws stand, so we’ll call this one a draw. Accomplishment Score: Romney 1 - Obama 1

Just an aside--Mr. Romney has been saying that he re-entered the private sector after leaving the Massachusetts governorship. Factually, his assertion skims the outside edge of truth. His term ended on January 4, 2007, but he filed papers to establish an exploratory presidential committee the day before leaving office. He announced his candidacy for President on February 13, 2007.  So, yes, he was technically a private citizen, but his premature filing and his official political re-entry five short weeks later makes his private citizen assertion a little “iffy”.

Romney likes to remind us of his business credentials. He started Bain Capital, a company whose focus is on buying companies, laying off employees, and then selling the gutted company to another investor. By the millions he has made from Bain, I suppose we have to call that an accomplishment, at least for him…for the thousands of people he put out of work, not so much. I’m not sure I would call this a good business model for improving our jobless rate, but, hey, he seems proud of it. In the meantime, President Obama has overseen a slow but steady decline in the unemployment rate to a level that is the lowest we have seen in three years. Accomplishment Score: Romney 0 - Obama 1

How about foreign policy? A few days ago Romney called Russia “our number one geopolitical foe” going on to state that he was appalled that President Obama wanted to further reduce our nuclear weaponry. Russia? Apparently he has been too busy lately to read anything about Iran or North Korea and he thinks nuclear bombs are cool. As for President Obama, he has brought an end to the war in Iraq, formed an international coalition to deal with the Middle East, convinced other nations to co-operate in the attempt to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and eliminated Osama Bin Laden. Accomplishment Score: Romney 0 - Obama 4

Total Accomplishment Score: Romney 1 - Obama 6

I’d do a side by side comparison of their “compelling” personalities, but that just seems cruel.

As the Supreme Court Holds Its Hearings, Let's Get the Name Right...Respectfully

The Supreme Court is holding several days of  hearings this week before beginning their consideration of our national health care plan.

what eye thynk: Let's call it what it is. It is not Obamacare; it is the Affordable Care Act.

“Obamacare” is a disparaging term coined by the Republicans to signal their disgust with a major bill that, in the end, they could not stop from being passed. Over the past two years, I can’t remember even one instance of a national health care opponent using its correct name. It is childish and insulting.

That attitude has been a problem with this Congress from day one of President Obama’s administration. The Republican Party has refused to respect him. They act as though theirs is the only party worthy of holding the office of President of the United States and anyone elected who does not meet their approval should be mocked as a joke, no esteem need be accorded.  This good ol' boy attitude is anachronistic and should be embarrassing to anyone who has reached the office of United States Congressman or woman.

Over the past two years, the term "Obamacare" has become accepted, even by those who should know better.  I read it in the newspaper and I hear it on the television and it irks me every time.  It demonstrates how we as a country have come to accept the casual disrespect shown to our 44th President.  I don't expect everyone to join in a President Obama love-fest, but at least respect the office and the man who holds it.

Needed: Warmongers Anonymous

Mitch McConnell and Senator McCain want Congress to authorize force against Syria.  Romney and Santorum talk to Aipac, (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), apparently ready to start a war with Iran.

what eye thynk:  Yeah, we see how well that worked in Iraq.

For the most part, the Middle East countries are ruled by a tribal mentality, ie. tribal loyalty trumps national unity every time.  Our Western style rules don't work there.  Witness the deterioration of the phony democracy we set up in Iraq.  Witness the increased violence in Afghanistan as our withdrawal approaches.  Witness how anti-US sentiment multiplies in the entire region every time we attempt to stick our nose into their business.

I'm not saying we should ignore social atrocities and allow nuclear weapons to proliferate; but we are not the boss of the world.

President Obama's measured approach of coalition building, encouraging other nations to take the lead and the pursuit of economic sanctions seems destined to reap better results with less loss of American lives and less stress on our fragile economy.
