December 31 - Monday Quote

I'm having too much fun to stop now, so...

September 10 - Monday Quote(s)

Some of my favorite quotes from the DNC...

monday quote(s):
Ted Strickland -- “Barack Obama is betting on the American worker. Mitt Romney is betting on a Bermuda shell corporation. Barack Obama saved the American auto industry. Mitt Romney saved on his taxes.”

Bill Clinton -- “We believe ‘we are all in this together’ is a better philosophy than ‘ you are on your own’…Democracy doesn’t have to be a blood sport. It can be an honorable enterprise.”

Michelle Obama -- “(Barack Obama) believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.”

And these three by Barack Obama -- “You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting your closest ally.”

“Have a surplus? Try a tax cut. Deficit too high? Try another. Feeling a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, reel back some regulations and call us in the morning.”

“If you turn away now--if you buy into the cynicism that the change we fought for isn’t possible…well, change will not happen. If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other voices will fill the void: lobbyists and special interests; the people with the $10 million checks who are trying to buy this election and those who are making it harder for you to vote: Washington politicians who want to decide who you can marry, or control health care choices that women should make for themselves. Only you can make sure that doesn’t happen...if you believe in a country where everyone gets a far shot and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules, then I need you to vote this November.”

Quick Facts - Theatre of the Absurd Edition

In 2008, the city of San Francisco planned to paint their bike lanes to add an additional layer of safety for their bike riders.  This plan has been delayed for four years because of a lawsuit filed by a local resident claiming bike lanes cause pollution.  Huh?

A federal judge in Boston has decided that the Massachusetts Department of Corrections must provide sex change surgery for a male inmate who wants to become a woman.  The inmate is serving a life sentence for murder. Judge Mark L. Wolf says that denying the inmate the surgery he wants would be cruel and unusual punishment because the inmate is so miserable living as a man.  Note to Judge Wolf: He's supposed to be miserable--he's in prison for murder!

And now it's the Democrats turn...

monday quote:  I'm not a member of any organized political party.  I'm a Democrat.  (Will Rogers, actor, 1879-1935)

Eye Recommend --- Apparently This Matters: Whale Puke

APPARENTLY THIS MATTERS:  WHALE PUKE, by Jarrett Bellini -- "So why, then, is a giant glob of whale barf worth more than a luxury car?"  (It's Sunday on a holiday weekend; what better time to forget politics for a minute and enjoy a good laugh.)

August 27 -- Monday Quote

As school starts again, I think a quote from Winnie the Pooh's creator fits the bill this week.

monday quote:  To the uneducated, an A is just three sticks. (A.A. Milne, author, 1882-1956)

August 13 - Monday Quote

Makes sense to me...

monday quote:   If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over? (John Wooden, coach, 1910-2010)

August 6 - Monday Quote

If only we could get Mitt and the rest of the 1% to be more in touch with their inner patriot...

monday quote: While some people might find it distasteful to pay taxes, I don't. I find it patriotic. (Mark Cuban, Am. Businessman 1958-   )

July 30 - Monday Quote

Having just spent the better part of two days trying to get three photos from my phone to my Facebook page, I dedicate this week's quote to myself.

monday quote: Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy. (Joseph Campbell, author, 1904-1987)

July 23 - Monday Quote(s)

In honor of the 2012 London Olympics...

monday quote(s):  A lifetime of training for just ten seconds. (Jesse Owens, athlete and winner of four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, 1913-1980)

If one synchronised swimmer drowns, do all the rest have to drown too? (Steven Wright, comedian, 1955-    )

July 15 - Monday Quote

I was looking for a good quote this week when I came across this.  It made me smile because it is so true.

monday quote:  True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country. (Kurt Vonnegut, author, 1922-2007)

July 9 - Monday Quote

All the Republicans who continue to insist that Ronald Reagan was the be-all and end-all of conservative politics, should remember that he also stood for fairness in our tax laws and that being wealthy shouldn't exempt you from paying your fair share.

monday quote:  We are going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that have allowed some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share. In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing while a bus driver was paying 10% of his salary and that’s crazy. It’s time we stopped it. (Ronald Reagan, President, 1911-2004)

July 2 - Monday Quote

Thank you to all those who risked much to pass and defend the ACA.

monday quote:  Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have. (Margaret Mead, scientist, 1901-1978)

June 18 - Monday Quote

And we can thank our Supreme Court and their Citizens United decision for making things worse than President Wilson could ever have imagined...

monday quote:  The government, which was designed for the people, has got into the hands of the bosses and their employers, the special interests. An invisible empire has been set up above the forms of democracy. (Woodrow Wilson, President, 1856-1924)

June 11 - Monday Quote

This week's quote is dedicated to the "One Percent" and the members of our government who are owned by them.

monday quote: Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers. (Aristotle, philosopher, 384 BC - 322 BC)

May 28 - Monday Quote(s) - Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day.

monday quotes:  Sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come. (Carl Sandburg, poet, 1878-1967)

War would end if the dead could return. (Stanley Baldwin, English statesman, 1867-1947)

I was lucky; my father came home.  He never spoke about World War II.  I know he drove a tank.  I know that he was in Africa and I know that he was in Japan.  I never heard him say a word about it, but I was proud of him anyway.

To every man and woman who has ever served in the military and to everyone who lives with the loss of their soldier...thank you.

May 21 - Monday Quote

I've always liked this...

monday quote: I would have written of me on my stone: I had a lover's quarrel with the world. (Robert Frost, Poet, 1874-1963)

May 14 - Monday Quote

As we wake up to a new week...

monday quote: I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance. (Steven Wright, comedian, 1955-    )

May 7 - Monday Quote

I know I'm a little late for Earth Day, but this is a reminder that protecting our planet is more than a once a year idea.  Without conscientious stewardship, our future generations could find themselves homeless.

monday quote:  Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature's inexorable imperative. (H.G. Wells, author, 1866-1946)

April 23 - Monday Quote

Because I have always loved Dr. Seuss...maybe because my mother thought his books were stupid and wouldn't let me bring them home from the library, so I read every one I could find while hiding in the stacks on Saturday mornings.

monday quote:  Adults are obsolete children. (Dr. Seuss 1904-1991)
