Donald Trump and Jeb Bush at Wednesday's Republican Debate |
But one statement rose above the others. That was when Donald Trump challenged Jeb Bush about George W.Bush's record on terrorism. Jeb responded by saying that his brother 'kept America safe.'
That is fundamentally false. Period. Full stop...
...Jeb's falsehood is not a trivial matter or subject to spin. When George W. Bush was president, the single worst terrorist attack on American soil took place. That is a demonstrable fact. Nearly 3,000 innocent people died..
...To pretend that no security breach occurred is baffling...
...It's admirable, in a way, that Jeb is so willing to defend his brother. What is much less admirable is that Jeb Bush's comment went unchallenged. No one on the debate stage reminded him of his glaring oversight. Shockingly, neither did any of the moderators."
eye'm thynkin': The Bush family may want to forget how awful W was. America cannot; and must not.

GOP candidates leave the stage after Wednesday's debate |
The political media has an answer. Carly Fiorina 'crushed it.'...
MSNBC's Benjy Sarlin highlighted the exchange that generated the most attention of the night.
'In one of several skirmishes, businesswoman Carly Fiorina...responded to recent remarks by Trump deriding her physical appearance. "I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said," Fiorina said.
The audience burst into massive applause in response, easily the loudest of the night. Trump, who seemed caught off guard by the explosive reaction to the field's only female candidate, said that Fiorina 'has a beautiful face' and is a 'beautiful woman.'"
Because condescension is so superior to misogyny.
"But while much of the political establishment seemed eager to applaud Fiorina's debate 'victory.' there was just one problem that's been largely overlooked: much of what she said last night wasn't true. Indeed, as a substantive matter, Fiorina, who's running for president despite never having held public office, spoke with great confidence and poise, but generally seemed clueless.
Her rhetoric about Planned Parenthood was plainly at odds with reality."
Ms. Fiorina went on a rant focused on getting Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to look at the (already investigated and widely reported to be proven false) anti-abortion videos and daring them to stand in the way of defunding of Planned Parenthood. Typical Republican rhetoric--never let the facts get in the way of a good red meat issue.
And, on the PP issue, Ms. Fiorina went even further than most Republicans. She described in grossly graphic detail a video that in fact does not exist--not in an unedited version, not in a highly edited, anti-abortion progaganda version. As Vox' Sarah Kliff--who has watched all the PP footage--wrote, "Either Fiorina hasn't watched the Planned Parenthood videos or she is knowingly misrepresenting the footage." (Color me not shocked.)
"She said it takes 'two-thirds of the states' to ratify a constitutional amendment, but it actually takes three-fourths."
When you want to lead the free-world, it might behoove you to first find out how your own country works.
"Her comments about the criminal justice system were simply untrue."
She claimed that two-thirds of the people in prison are there for non-violent drug offenses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are 1.5 million people in prison today. One-half are listed as violent offenders; only 300,000 are incarcerated for non-violent, drug related offenses. Maybe her inability to understand basic math had something to do with her running HP into the ground while she was in charge?
"She insisted that Democrats, who've been pleading with Republicans for years to pass immigration reform, 'don't want' to pass immigration reform."
I guess that's why the President--who is a Democrat--has attempted to address immigration through executive order. (You know, because he couldn't find any Democrats in Congress willing to work with him.) The truth is, Senate Democrats spent an entire year working on and passing an immigration reform bill introduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R). House Republican leadership refused to bring it to a vote.
"Her rhetoric about foreign policy was 'bizarre.'"
She said she would focus on intimidating Putin by increasing the U.S. Sixth Fleet, seemingly forgetting that the Sixth Fleet is already enormous and that the U.S. has enough nuclear weapons pointed at Russian that we could level Putin's country several times over.
She proposed the U.S. conduct military exercises in the Baltics--where President Obama is already conducting military exercises.
She wants to add several thousand U.S. troops to those stationed in Germany--where 40,000 troops are already stationed. It's hard to see how another 2,000 would have much impact.
She said she would push for a missile defense system in Poland, a long-term project that she seems to think will solve a current problem.
It make have sounded like she has a foreign policy plan to take on Putin, but the truth is she had some poorly thought out ideas based on inferior information.
Let's be honest here, when the biggest response of the night comes from a woman pointing out that her party's front runner is a misogynistic, white trash bully; and when the debate's "winner" gives a forceful performance while remaining confused about just about everything, we can safely assume that the American people are still in the dark when it comes to any type of Republican platform or what any of the 15 remaining candidates really believe.
